Shirdi temple trust to honour Tendulkar

In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Shri Saibaba Sansthan Trust which manages the famous Sai Baba temple at Shirdi said Monday it will confer an award on Sachin Tendulkar to commemorate the cricketing legend’s outstanding achievements.

“The residents of Shirdi village wanted the temple trust to honour Sachin in a special way. Hence we decided to initiate the ‘Sai Ratna’ award. Sachin will be the first one to be awarded this honour,” trust chairman Jayant Sasane told.

Sasane, however, said that the trust is yet to speak to Tendulkar and work out the finer details of the award. “It was only last (Sunday) evening that we decided to bestow the master batsman with an honour. We shall invite him and all other members of Team India, once we firm up our plans,” he said.

Sasane said that a few players have already visited the temple to seek Sai Baba’s blessings. Zaheer Khan’s mother Zakia, who stays in Shrirampur, 30 km from Shirdi, had also visited the temple.

All-rounder Suresh Raina visited the temple Monday, accompanied by officials of the Sahara group. Sasane had accompanied him to the temple, where he stayed for 10 minutes. The Sansthan also gifted Raina with a gold coin, coconut and a Sai Baba statue.
